CONCERT PROGRAMME

J. Williams. “The Five Sacred Trees” for bassoon and symphony orchestra
W. A. Mozart. Concertone for Two Violins and Orchestra in C major, K. 190
E. Elgar. “Enigma“ variations, op. 36

Charismatic violin primarius Zbigniev Levicki and one of the best bassoonists in Lithuania Andrius Puplauskis, together with the Lithuanian State Symphony Orchestra, invite you to experience an impressive journey through the world of violin and bassoon. The guest of the anniversary concert of these musicians is the concertmaster of the Klaipėda Chamber Orchestra, violinist Konrad Levicki.

The evening will begin with bassoonist Andrius Puplauskis performing the American composer John Williams’ (b. 1932) Concerto for Bassoon “The Five Sacred Trees”. The piece was written especially for Judith LeClair, concertmaster of the New York Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra’s bassoon group, on the occasion of the orchestra’s 150th anniversary. Each of the five parts of the concerto is dedicated to revealing a different mythical ancient Celtic tree.

Z. Levicki and K. Levicki will perform the enchanting Concertone (Italian: “large concerto”) for two violins and symphony orchestra by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756–1791). Musicologist Alexander Hyatt King wrote about this work, written in Italy: “In this work, the old genre has acquired a new soul – the baroque instruments of the concerto grosso are perfectly combined with the new gallant style”.

In the second part of the concert, the Lithuanian State Symphony Orchestra will perform the “Enigma Variations” by British composer Edward Elgar (1857–1934). The 14 variations “encrypt” portraits of people dear to the composer – from his wife Alice to E. Elgar himself. The work, first performed in London in 1899, earned E. Elgar international recognition.

This evening, the Lithuanian State Symphony Orchestra will be conducted by Martynas Staškus, conductor of the Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theatre.
