In 2025, we celebrate an extraordinary anniversary – this year, the most prominent Lithuanian artist of all time, Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis (1875–1911), turns 150. The anniversary year’s program includes a joint concert by the Lithuanian State Symphony Orchestra (artistic director and chief conductor Gintaras Rinkevičius) and the choir “Jauna muzika” (artistic director Vaclovas Augustinas). This is an exceptional look into the work of M. K. Čiurlionis, presenting a unique concert program with strong creative ideas.
The first part of the concert will focus on rarely performed works of harmonized folk songs by M. K. Čiurlionis, organically intertwined with works written by contemporary Lithuanian composers – Gintautas Venislovas (b. 1973), Jurgita Mieželytė (b. 1980), Vaclovas Augustinas (b. 1959), Zita Bružaitė (b. 1966) and Donatas Zakaras (b. 1979). The second part of the concert will feature M. K. Čiurlionis’ on of the most famous musical work – the symphonic poem “The Sea”, often considered to be the beginning of all Lithuanian national symphonic music.
On this evening, together with the Lithuanian State Symphony Orchestra conducted by maestro Gintaras Rinkevičius, the choir “Jauna muzika” (eng. “Young Music”) led by conductor and composer Vaclovas Augustinas will perform at the LSSO Concert Hall. “Jauna muzika” is one of the most prominent and capable vocal groups in Lithuania, a laureate of 15 international choir competitions, often organizing concerts in its own country and abroad. Over a period of more than 35 years, the choir has accumulated a diverse and valuable repertoire, which includes works from a cappella, masterpieces of vocal-instrumental music to important premieres. Contemporary works by foreign and Lithuanian composers play an important role in the choral programs of “Jauna muzika”. Due to its high professional skill, the choir has earned wide international recognition: it has toured Europe, China, Israel, Japan, participated in international festivals, and performed with the world's most famous chamber and symphony orchestras and conductors.
